When sitting in a circle the energies support the people taking part in
that circle.
Be
aware that each church will have their own set of rules governing circle
procedures. For example, if you are keen to improve your mediumship or a novice
medium, you must ask the circle leader for permission to work within the
circle. Do not assume that the church allows people from outside turning up and
practising mediumship within the circle. Some churches are happy to have people
practising their skills however, in Birkenhead Spiritualists’ they have a
preference to ‘in-house’ mediums only. It is important that this practice is
respected.
The
title of ‘in-house’ means that the mediums belong to the church. They are Full
members and have been fully vetted and they understand the procedures of
mediumship. They are trained to a high standard.
Some
people feel nervous about visiting an open circle and this is natural. But it
should be a positive experience.
Before the circle begins that the housekeeping
or fire procedures are read out. Spiritualism is a religion and it is customary
that a prayer is offered and this is to show respect to God and the Spirit
world.
The
mediums are introduced to the circle, so everyone knows who is working within
the circle. Mediums will approach and ask your permission before giving any
information from the spirit world.
A medium must be respectful and courteous.
If a medium is rude or uses degrading language or inappropriate undertones, you
must report them immediately to the circle leader. A medium is there to give
comfort and to uphold a sacred office of mediumship, not to degrade or
humiliate. In
recent months, the church has reactivated the ‘Closed Circle', and the
title states this circle is closed to visitors. It is customary for most
churches to hold a Closed circle. Only Full members are allowed to sit in this
type of circle. They are experienced Spiritualists who are comfortable to sit
with like minded individuals.
An
open circle attracts people from different backgrounds, and not all have the
understanding or empathy towards Spiritualism. Therefore, the energies are vastly
different to those Spiritualists sitting in a closed circle.
Finally,
theCircle of Light. The circle of light is usually held in December and
close to when our church shuts down for the festive break.
This circle is run
on the same lines as an open circle. The difference being is that the room is
lit with candles, and we decorate the church it is a time to give thanks for
the past year and to look forward to a prosperous and bright New Year. Each
church will have their own way of celebrating the circle of light and it is a
wonderful way to bring people together. Mediums work within the circle to
bringing hope and comfort to those that need it.
During
the circle, the names of our loved ones and friends who have gone to the spirit
world are called out. This will also include family pets. We remember them with
love and respect. The circle of light is a special circle and one that many
enjoy.
To
summarise, an open circle is open to members and visitors it is run with
a set of rules for your comfort and safety. We have our own ’in-house’ mediums and
they are trusted and have gone through procedures to be allowed to work in the
circle.
A closed circle is for Full members of the church only and this circle is
for experienced Spiritualists.
